Become an Airbnb host

How to list your place on Airbnb, step by step, with what hosts in Norway ask about along the way. Free, no sign-in.

Last checked against the service's own pages on 3 November 2026.

Before you start

What you need

  • An Airbnb account, free with email, Google or Apple
  • Address, number of guests, bedrooms, beds and bathrooms
  • At least five photos, ideally ten or more
  • Passport or driving licence: Airbnb requires ID verification before your first listing
  • A bank account number for payouts
Time needed

With photos and text ready the setup goes quickly, and you can save as you go. Airbnb releases the payout about a day after the guest checks in; how fast the money reaches your account depends on the payout method.

Build your checklist

Answer five questions and get a checklist made for you. Nothing is stored unless you ask for it by email.

1. Are you hosting as a private person or through a company?
2. Do you have good photos of the place ready?
3. Is the place already listed on another channel?
4. Do you know which bank account payouts should go to?
5. Have you checked the short-term rental rules where the place is?

Your checklist

Answer all five questions and your checklist appears here.

How to list your place on Airbnb

  1. 1

    Start the setup

Go to airbnb.com/host/homes, sign in or create an account, and start the listing setup. You can save and continue later.

  2. 2

    Describe the place

Choose the property type and whether guests get the whole place, a private room or a shared room. Add the address, number of guests, bedrooms, beds and bathrooms.

  3. 3

    Tick the amenities

Include everything that applies, including what's easy to forget, like an EV charger, sauna, fireplace and cot. What you don't tick doesn't exist when guests filter.

  4. 4

    Upload photos

Airbnb requires at least five photos. The cover photo decides whether the guest clicks, so pick the best of the living room or the view, in landscape.

  5. 5

    Write the title and description

Keep the title short, around 32 characters, so it shows in full on mobile, and say what's special, not just "Apartment in Oslo". The description should answer what guests wonder about beds, bathrooms, parking and distances.

  6. 6

    Set the price and rules

Add a starting price per night, any discounts such as an offer for the first guests, cancellation terms and whether guests can book instantly or must request. You can change prices at any time.

  7. 7

    Verify identity and payouts

New hosts must verify their identity with a passport or driving licence before the first listing, and Airbnb keeps the calendar closed until that's done. Add the account payouts should go to. Only you as the owner can do this.

  8. 8

    Publish

Read through the preview and publish. Reply quickly to the first enquiries; good first reviews do a lot for the next booking.

Once the listing is live

Connect it to Gjestfri and we keep the calendar, prices and guest messages together across channels, so you avoid double bookings.

Questions and answers

Does it cost anything to list?
No. Airbnb only charges when you get a booking. From 13 October 2026, hosts in the EEA pay a single 15.5% service fee deducted from the payout, and guests pay no separate fee. Run the numbers in our commission calculator.
Do I have to give my national ID number?
Yes, before the first payout. Platforms report rental income to the Norwegian Tax Administration, and new reporting rules apply from 2026. That is why Airbnb asks for your national ID number or company registration number.
Can I rent out a flat in a housing cooperative or condominium?
Usually, but there are limits. In a Norwegian housing cooperative you may rent out the whole home you live in for up to 30 nights a year without the board's approval. In a condominium, short-term rental of the whole unit is limited to 90 nights a year, and the bylaws can lower that to 60 or raise it to 120. Always check the bylaws.
How is the income taxed?
If you rent out the home you live in for periods under 30 days, the first NOK 15,000 a year is tax free. Of the amount above that, 85% counts as taxable capital income. Holiday homes and secondary homes follow their own rules. Our tax calculator works it out.
What happens after I publish?
The listing goes live and guests can find and book it. Once bookings come in, you can connect the listing to Gjestfri and keep the calendar, prices and guest messages together with your other channels.
